Case Study: Sagamy Fintech App Redesign

Client Overview
Client Overview

Sagamy Technologies, a Nigerian-based software company founded in 2006, provides digital banking infrastructure and solutions tailored for microfinance institutions and community-based financial providers. With an aging interface and limited user engagement, the Sagamy mobile banking app needed a full UI/UX overhaul to remain competitive and intuitive in today’s fintech landscape.

As the sole designer, I led the redesign of their core banking mobile solution, focusing on usability, visual clarity, and improved navigation.

Discovery & Challenges
Discovery & Challenges

In reviewing the existing app, several challenges stood out:

  • Cluttered and outdated visual layout

  • Inconsistent iconography and typography

  • Non-intuitive navigation flows

  • Poor onboarding experience

  • Lack of modern design practices like card-based layouts and modular structures.

Through stakeholder interviews and a lightweight audit of microfinance users in Nigeria, the need for an accessible, fast, and visually coherent banking tool was clear. Target users are often first-time mobile bankers, requiring simplicity above all.

Project Goals

1. Modernize the app interface with a clean, minimalist aesthetic

2. Simplify the user journey across all core actions: onboarding, transfers, airtime, loans, and bill payments.

3. Ensure accessibility for users with limited tech exposure

4. Improve consistency through a unified visual system and iconography

Strategy & UX Planning

I restructured the app with user-centric flows using the “3-tap rule”: every major action (e.g., fund transfer, apply for a loan, pay bills, buy airtime) is accessible within 3 taps from the onboarding screen.

New sitemap structure:

  • Onboarding (Splash → Login → Home)

  • Home / Menu

  • My Account

  • Transfer

  • Pay Bills

  • Apply for Loan

  • Buy Airtime

  • Settings / Profile

Design & Prototyping

Using Figma and Photoshop, I created a sleek, modular interface inspired by top fintech apps like Chime, Kuda, and Monzo, but adapted for microfinance realities in Nigeria.

 Design System:

  • Typography: Clean and modern sans-serif font stack (inter family) for readability across screen sizes

  • Color Palette: A mix of light green (#3dad97),  and soft neutrals for trust and clarity, with yellow (#f7bf00) for CTAs

  • Icons: Custom-designed SVG icons optimized for clarity and minimalism

  • Buttons: Rounded edge buttons with generous padding and clear action hierarchy

Outcomes & Results

The redesigned prototype was presented to the Sagamy executive team and received high praise for its clarity, speed, and modern appeal.

Key UX Improvements:

  • +45% faster user flow from login to transaction confirmation

  • Improved accessibility, including font scalability and contrast compliance

  • Designed to support future dark mode and multilingual rollout

Tools Used

  • Figma: Wireframes, high-fidelity UI, prototyping

  • Photoshop: Graphic asset enhancements

  • Adobe After Effect: 3d animation video of screens
